I didn't watch this at the movies as I had low expectations and didn't want to financially reward the wokerati - so I watched it on popcorn time. And I am regretful I wasted my bandwidth on it. It was woeful. WOEFUL! It wasn't even Dickens anymore it was just wokerati garbage.

Ooh Morfydd Clark plays both Clara and Dora? That's super neat! DC is a super goddamn crazy book, I'm SO glad they're leaning into the Comedy(tm) of it all. Also I can see why Iannucci immediately thought of Patel for David, like I'm not that familiar with his work but he is absolutely radiating BDE (Big David Energy) this whole video? 'The Personal History Of David Copperfield (2019) feels, quite significantly, like a clip-show, closer to a series of interconnected skits than a traditionally cinematic narrative. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, though. It gives the piece - which does, of course, have an overarching story - a unique feel. It's also an apt way to condense a lifetime into two hours, featuring only the most significant moments of its eponymous character's life. It all seems a little surreal, especially when it begins to visualise its narration in the middle of select scenes. The experience starts off a little slow but it soon picks up the pace, moving towards its low-key finale with a fair bit of momentum. Most of it is presented rather farcically, its eccentric characters flailing their arms or speaking in eloquent metaphor. There are a fair few moments that provoke a chuckle or two, but the flick still retains some resonance. It isn't all overtly comedic; some of its more sobering stuff does, indeed, sting. It comes so close to having something to say about class, but this aspect remains distinctly subtextual and always comes second to the more straightforward story. This isn't a huge issue, though. Perhaps the movie's biggest asset is its ensemble cast. Patel, who perfectly portrays the adult version of the whimsical protagonist, is a real stand-out. As are Capaldi and Laurie, who play eccentric but endearing middle-aged men. Each and every cast member is decidedly good, though, doing exactly what they need to with apparent joy. Overall, the film is entertaining and well-made. It's fun, energetic and, in general, just a good time. 7/10.
David Copperfield is probably my favourite Dickens novel, but at nearly 700 pages, there is no way the full and original story could have been kept. However, although I did really enjoy the film, in order to do so I had to forget the book and just take this interpretation at face value. One of the recurring motifs in the film is a small box in which David keeps scraps of paper on which he's written memorable phrases, and I felt that was almost symbolic of the screenplay - it was as though they'd torn Dickens' original into pieces, and put a select few back together but in the wrong order and minus several key events and characters. Having said all that, I'm a big fan of Iannucci, and believe Malcolm Tucker to be one of the greatest comic characters of all time. Given the two hour time restraint, Armando therefore came up with something highly original and stuffed full of brilliant comic moments, and Peter Capaldi made the transformation from Tucker to Micawber seamless! As for Hugh Laurie, the man is a comic genius, and his Mr Dick was superlative. Oh, and I thoroughly agree with Mark Kermode - Dev Patel has the comic timing and instinct of Chaplin at his best.
